Deaf Learners on the Autism Spectrum (3 credits)
Deaf and hard of hearing students with Autism Spectrum disorders have unique learning characteristics that present challenges in a variety of settings for teachers, parents, and caregivers. This course will address the specific characteristics and learning needs of Deaf and hard of hearing students with Autism Spectrum disorders with a communication perspective and offer strategies for dealing with a variety of situations in different environments. A collaborative approach that addresses solutions to increase effectiveness in the area of Home/School Continuum will be provided
Tuition: $690 ( PST credits); $1,989 ( Graduate credits)
Prerequisites: Must have a B.A./B.S. and have completed an introductory course in the education of exceptional children or be a family member of a Deaf or Hard of Hearing student with Autism Spectrum Disorders or permission of the instructor. This course is designed for practicing teachers and family members of deaf and hard of hearing students.
Course Materials: A selection of required readings will be required. In addition, students will be required to research a topic related to the case study and required project. Selected readings, websites, and articles will be made available to all students.

Teaching Latino Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children (3 credits)
Latino deaf and hard of hearing students now make up 24.5% of all school-age deaf and hard of hearing students. A majority of these children are from Spanish-speaking homes, and many are immigrants. Teachers and other service providers are often at a loss as to what to do to meet the needs of these students. This is a unique course offering. The course includes an overview of Latinos in the U.S. and of the Latino deaf community. It addresses critical topics relating to the education of Latino deaf and hard of hearing students.
Tuition: $690 (PST credits); $1,989 (graduate credits)
Prerequisites: BA/BS degree.
Class Format: High-speed connection access is highly recommended and a home computer is preferable to assure weekly assignments. Requires interaction with other students in course through online discussion and regular communication with instructor.

Psychology and Deafness (3 credits)
This course explores in depth current research topics such as language development, hearing and speech perception, education, literacy, cognition, social and psychological issues associated with prelingual and postlingual deafness. Diverse perspectives on issues within deafness such as the influence of etiology/genetics, familial variables, linguistic and communication approaches, educational settings will be discussed.

Introduction to Gerontology (3 credits)
This is a multidisciplinary introduction to the study of aging positively. We will cover concepts of active aging and resiliency, and define “productive aging” by elaborating on the numerous ways elders contribute to society and their families. Based on the latest research findings, we will explore in depth critical issues of aging, attending to differences by age and cohort, gender, cultural background, hearing status, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status.

Prerequisites: College level reading and writing skills.
